person with disability logoKona International Airport is uniquely designed with a series of open air pavilions that house the ticket lobbies, passenger boarding areas, concessions and baggage claim facilities. In keeping with the open air theme of the airport, there are no level entry jetways or loading bridges at Kona International Airport. Aircraft boarding is from the ground level, using portable stairs. Passengers with mobility impairments are provided boarding lift service, which may be arranged through your airlines.

ACCESSIBLE CURBSIDE LOADING AND UNLOADING ZONES

Accessible loading and unloading zones are available for active loading and unloading only. Vehicles are not allowed to be left unattended.

ACCESSIBLE PARKING SPACES

Accessible parking spaces are conveniently located in the public parking lot directly across the terminal near the crosswalks.

GUIDE/SERVICE DOGS

Guide/Service dogs are not considered “pets”.

FIRST AID

Kona International Airport is committed to ensuring your safety and security at the airport.  Airport Rescue and Fire Fighters are available 24 hours per day for first responder medical treatment and will refer to County Fire and Rescue ambulance services as required.

AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATORS (AEDs)

AEDs are available throughout the Terminal.

PORTER SERVICES

person on wheelchairUpon request, airlines will provide assistance to passengers with special needs through their Skycap (porter) services.  Skycaps affiliated with your airline can provide assistance with public transportation and also boarding and disembarking at your gate.  The Skycaps have been trained to assist travelers with disabilities and provide wheelchairs at the check-in counter, gate or baggage claim area.  Please advise your airline in advance to arrange for any special services to ensure assistance.

GROUND TRANSPORTATION

Taxi and Shuttle Service

Taxicab and shuttle services are available outside the Baggage Claim area.  Persons using collapsible chairs will be assisted by the drivers.

MOTORIZED WHEELCHAIRS

Each airline will provide information on specific procedures for storage of wheelchairs and wet-call batteries.

PRE-ARRANGED GROUND TRANSPORTATION

Pre-arranged Ground Transportation service permittees provide ground transportation services from the airport on a pre-arranged basis.  Arrangements are usually made by the passenger, or the passenger’s agent or representative, in advance of the passenger’s arrival at the airport, and include passenger transportation services, tours, and courtesy car services.  See Ground Transportation

RESTROOMS

In addition to accessible men’s and women’s restrooms, Kona International Airport has three accessible family (unisex) restrooms.  They are located at the:

  • North Terminal, east of the security checkpoint
  • South Terminal (Hawaiian Airlines), south of the security checkpoint
  • Ground Transportation Building (car rental check-in) across the flag pole

Text telephones for person who are deaf and hard of hearing are available at the following locations:

  • North Terminal departures
  • North Terminal baggage claim area (near restrooms)
  • South Terminal (Hawaiian Airlines) departures
  • South Terminal baggage claim area (near security checkpoint)

TELECOMMUNICATIONS RELAY SERVICES (TRS)

TRS is available statewide.  In Hawaii, you can make a local TRS call by dialing 711.
