Kapalua airport was built by Hawaiian Airlines and opened on March 1, 1987. The airport designator, JHM, is for the president of Hawaiian Airlines at the time John Henry Magoon.

Most airlines will check your luggage through to your final destination. Please request you’re your checked luggage is tagged to your final destination at your point of origin. Your ticket jacket contains claim tickets for your individual pieces of luggage. The claim ticket has the airport code for the final destination for your luggage. Example: You have claim tickets and are arriving at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport and you have a connecting flight to Maui. If the final destination on the claim ticket reads HNL, your luggage will be dropped off at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. You will need to retrieve your luggage from Baggage Claim and take your luggage with you to the connecting flight. The common airport codes are:
