Hilo International Airport is located on the east side of the Island of Hawaii.  It is served by interisland airlines. The Big Island is home to active volcanoes, orchid farms, waterfalls and a rugged coast line. We look forward to welcoming you to Hilo.

What’s New

CDC Mask Order For Public Transportation Hubs will not be enforced at State of Hawaii Airports

April 18, 2022 – Following the court decision issued by the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida, Biden Administration officials have advised that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) public transportation masking order is not in effect at this time. This means wearing masks on airport property is no longer required. MORE>>

Reminder: Masks must be worn at State Airports 

March 23, 2022 – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) reminds everyone that masks must be worn at all times at State Airports through April 18, 2022. MORE>>

HDOT warns travelers of limited parking at Hawaii airports during holiday season

December 20, 2021 – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) Airports Division alerts travelers of limited parking at the five main airports across the state during the holiday season due to an anticipated increase in airline passengers. MORE>>

Contractors and visitors required to provide vaccination/testing status to enter state facilities

September 09, 2021 – Gov. David Ige has signed an executive order that requires contractors and visitors at state facilities and on state property to provide their vaccination or testing status prior to entry. The Order takes effect on Sept. 13, 2021. MORE>>

Temperature screening equipment installed at all gates at Hawaii’s five busiest airports

Aug 20, 2020 – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) is happy to announce that phase two of the new thermal temperature screening equipment installation has been completed at Hawaii’s five airports that accept trans-Pacific flights. A total of 133 cameras statewide are operational and available to detect people with a body temperature of 100.4 degrees and above. The equipment is now installed at all gates and departure security checkpoints at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), Kahului Airport (OGG), Lihue Airport (LIH), Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole (KOA) and Hilo International Airport (ITO). MORE>>

Electric vehicle parking benefits to sunset

June 24, 2020 – Electric vehicles have been able to park at airports free of charge since 2012. Electric vehicle owners will be assessed the parking fee at the airports and any other lot or metered area that was previously free beginning 12 a.m. on July 1, 2020.  MORE>>

Vehicle height limiter to be installed for improvement project at Hilo International Airport parking lot

April 4, 2019 - The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) Airports Division will be installing vehicle shelters over the parking lot entrance and exit lanes to provide shelter for motorists as they enter and exit the parking lot. To avoid causing damage to any vehicles or vehicle shelters, a vehicle height limiter bar will be installed at a height of 9’-6” at the parking lot entrance. MORE>>

Construction closure for improvement project scheduled for Hilo International Airport parking lot

March 8, 2019 - The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) Airports Division will be closing the two exit lanes leading out of the parking lot at Hilo International Airport (ITO) on Tuesday, Mar. 12, 2019 through Wednesday, Mar. 13, 2019 to continue construction on the vehicle shelter over the public parking lot exit. The two exit lanes leading out of the parking lot will be closed overnight at approximately 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Mar. 12, 2019, following the last scheduled passenger flight of the night, and will reopen at 4 a.m. on Wednesday, Mar. 13, 2019, weather permitting. Improvement project scheduled for Hilo International Airport parking lot

Transportation Network Companies Eligible To Begin Pick Up Service At Neighbor Island Airports Beginning Feb. 1, 2019

Jan. 24, 2019 – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) announces that Transportation Network Companies (TNC) will be eligible to pick up customers at neighbor island airports beginning Feb. 1, 2019. Designated ride share pick up locations at Kahului Airport (OGG), Lihue Airport (LIH), Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole (KOA), Hilo International Airport (ITO) and Kapalua Airport (JHM) have been established by HDOT and are shown on the maps in the hyperlink for each airport. Pele - Fire Goddess

Pele, the Fire Goddess, is the goddess of fire, lightning, wind and volcanoes and the creator of the Hawaiian Islands. She is also known for her power, passion, jealousy, and capriciousness. Pele's home is believed to be the fire pit called Halemaʻumaʻu crater, at the summit caldera of Kīlauea, one of the Earth's most active volcanoes; but her domain encompasses all volcanic activity on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi.
